Newton and the Apple Tree | A Visual Novel by Laplacian

Created by Sol Press

’Newton’ was actually the pen name of a brilliant-minded girl!? Welcome to the time traveling visual novel, Newton and the Apple Tree. Protagonist Syuji Asanaga and his childhood friend Yotsuko Utakane, while tracking down Syuji's missing grandfather, unexpectedly ended up traveling through time.

Haru means Spring - Project Update 8
about 6 years ago – Sun, Feb 25, 2018 at 09:58:19 PM

We’re back with yet another project update \o/ There’s not terribly much to write this week, but Bango seems to finally be coming out of Post-Lavi Depression, which means that all that held him back this week was a power cut! The Yotsuko Route QA build is almost ready too, we’re just waiting on some video editing.

Now onto the percentages! As always, these percentages will probably indicate where heroine routes split off from the main game and may be considered spoilers, so reader discretion is advised!

Translation:

  • Common Route: 89%
  • Yotsuko’s Route: 100%
  • Lavi’s Route: 100%
  • Haru’s Route: 23%

Editing:

  • Common Route: 76%
  • Yotsuko’s Route: 100%
  • Lavi’s Route: 40%

Good day, everyone. This week was kind slow due to technical problems, but I should be back full force next week! I’m having a blast with Haru’s route so far. She’s just like I thought, a sweetie pie. But she also has a side I didn’t expect to her, more proactive and crafty than I thought! As expected of an older lady, yes, yes.

I can’t believe we’re past the halfway point now. I really don’t want this to be over any time soon! But I gotta keep going! Hoping as always that something everyone can enjoy by the end. Take care! I’ll be back next week! Hopefully with something more interesting to write about.

-- Bango

Another slow week from me, unfortunately, but I promise that Lavi’s route will be done before you know it. Despite being less than halfway through, though I have to say that Lavi’s personality really shines through here. She’s not just the kooky scientist she appears to be, she’s also got a very big heart. I can’t wait to see what more Lavi has in store for me in the second half of her route!

Post-Lavi Depression - Project Update 7
about 6 years ago – Sun, Feb 18, 2018 at 10:03:45 PM

Welcome to another project update! Turns out I almost forgot to write this one, whoopsie. Progress is being made, QA is going well. No screenshots this week, though, need to save the non-spoiler ones and spread them out.

Now onto the percentages! As always, these percentages will probably indicate where heroine routes split off from the main game and may be considered spoilers, so reader discretion is advised!

Translation

  • Common Route: 89%
  • Yotsuko's Route: 100%
  • Lavi's Route: 100%
  • Haru's Route: 11%

Editing

  • Common Route: 76%
  • Yotsuko's Route: 100%
  • Lavi's Route: 17%

*All percentages are rounded to the nearest whole value.

**You might note that the editing progress hasn’t changed much. Don’t worry, our editor hasn’t been slacking! He’s ahead of schedule on Newton and has spent the last week devoting himself to Sakura Sakura instead.

Good day everyone! We finished Lavi’s route, but there’s no time to mope around forever, even if I really, really want to!

Now we’re almost done with the common route and enter Haru’s. I get the feeling her route is gonna be a comfy ride through and through. I’ll have more to comment about her next week.

Haru’s just like she seems: as sweet as a bun. But I’m kinda surprised she’s also kind of fun and mischievous. So this is what they meant by older woman, huh? She’s not quite Lavi, though...

I don’t think I have much else to say this week, so take care, everyone!

-- Bango

Hello again! I’m just getting started on Lavi’s route and Bango keeps telling me I have to get going so that I can appreciate her even more. Unfortunately for him, I’ve been keeping busy with the Glossary and Sakura Sakura, so Lavi is going to have to wait a bit longer, but I’ll make sure to give her route as much care as Bango says it deserves. I promise, I’ll get back to her soon enough. Until next week!

"What's the title?" - "Good question." - Project Update 6
about 6 years ago – Sun, Feb 11, 2018 at 09:51:08 PM

Backerkits have gone out! QA has started! Bugs are being found and squashed by the truckload!

It’s been an exciting week here at Sol Press, with us finally having a build of the full game that’s at least partially in English. I’ve been joining in the QA, mainly to hack away at the ellipses, and I’ve been thoroughly enjoying it. As ZeHaffen mentioned before, the entire script from the demo has been reworked into present tense and, at least in my opinion, it’s much better off for it.

We also have comments from the QA team this week, AND screenshots! Yay \o/

Now onto the percentages! As always, these percentages will probably indicate where heroine routes split off from the main game and may be considered spoilers, so reader discretion is advised!

Translation:

  • Common Route: 76%
  • Yotsuko's Route: 100%
  • Lavi's Route: 100%

Editing:

  • Common Route: 76%
  • Yotsuko's Route: 100%

Hello, everyone! The work of any developer revolves usually around 3 things: More or less reasonable feature requests, regressions, unrelated complications, and off-by-one errors. Today, I am going to tell you about the second thing.

Whenever you change something in your code (or in this case the input your code works with), no matter how small the change, you risk two things. Bugs, and regressions, which are bugs you get to fix again.

This week was all about regression mitigation since I had to completely reinsert the translation for the scripts the demo was composed of. I trust that QA has now found all the issues that were present in the demo again so that they are now fixed for good. Until next time in Tales from the Engineer, where I may or may not tell you about the arduous quest to find an appropriate font.

※ The engineer on site takes no credit for the one joke that was part of their message.

I’m not very good with words but I hope you enjoy my update corner. QA is going great, I’m about halfway through the common route. I like to think I’m making steady progress. It’d be ideal that there’d be no text errors or bugs once a game goes into QA, but I personally would be worried that I’m somehow missing bugs or text errors haha. Every new error or bug I find during QA makes me feel useful (so please keep making typos or forgetting punctuation!) That’s all from me this week! Please enjoy my... interesting screenshots.

 --Haerts

Hello everyone, Kitty-tama here! I’ve been working at a slow but steady pace to make sure all the textual errors and bugs are gone for good to ensure the final product is as perfect as can be. Progress wise, I’m a little behind Haerts, but I don’t see this as a bad thing since we’re almost like a tag-team finding bugs and textual issues. Anything I might’ve accidentally overlooked, she’s probably got it, and vice versa. You’d think the process would be on the tedious or boring side, but with a story as entertaining as Newton and the Apple Tree’s, it’s quite fun to dig into it! Perhaps my favorite part of the testing process is how I get a more intimate look at the game and its workings. Perhaps the most satisfying part of the testing process is digging into all of the textual errors. Nothing drives me crazier than typos and grammatical errors, so with each one I correct, I feel quite powerful. It’s hard to decide which girl is the best girl since they’re all quite endearing in their own ways, but so far Haru has me won over by far. So cute! So elegant! So kind! Such a refined lady! She’s definitely my type. I can see all of the heroines growing on me in a similar way, so I’m eager to see what the rest of the game will hold in the future! That’s about all I have to say this time around. Until next time!

--Kitty-tama

Goody day everyone, the QA kicked in full force as you see. I’ve learned a lot this week. I don’t think I’ll ever write “Uwooh” ever again in my life!

Lavi’s route is finally done, might seem like there’s no much progress translating wise, but I’ve been double checking stuff and tackling the glossary this week, make sure you read it in the full game!

I think there’s more than enough to read this week, so I won’t go on too much this week. Be safe, toodles!

--Bango

Not much going on with me this week, pretty much the same old story as always. With that in mind, having finished up Yotsuko’s route this week, it really hit me just how much personality these characters truly have. Now that I’ve finished her story, I’ve come to appreciate her character a lot more; she’s a lot more complex, caring, and passionate than she initially comes off as. Getting to know her that much better through her route has made me way more excited to work on the rest of the girls’ routes (not that I wasn’t already excited), so make sure you take the time to play through them all and get to know each of the characters! That’s all for me this week, until next time!

Good day y’all. As we near the end of Lavi’s route, I kinda wanna start working a little slower… Just kidding!

The first beta is coming up. If you asked me when this started if I ever thought I would make it this far, the answer would be no. Every time I finish a script or a route it feels like climbing up a step that seemed incredibly distant before. I just hope that, by the end, something everyone can enjoy comes out of it. I’ll keep doing my very best!

Now I have to go get whipped by my supervisor and the testers for the errors that pop up in the beta! You know, fun times! Take care, everyone.

--Bango

As he nears the end of Lavi’s route, I kinda want Bango to start working a little slower… Kidding (a little). The man never sleeps, I swear I wake up every morning with three more files ready for me that weren’t translated when I fell asleep the night before. Oh well, I can only complain about progress so much, right? At least it’s a fun story; I’m looking forward to the final release so you all can enjoy it as much as I’ve enjoyed teasing Bango over some of his simpler mistakes like misspellings. Well, I should probably get back to work, there are probably at least two more files ready than there were when I started writing this. Until next time!

--Adam

Why, hello there! Isn’t it always fun giving your project manager a completely reasonable deadline for your task and then not being able to meet it? You think so, too? I thought so, because that happened to me this week. Getting the script ready for the game was actually going more smoothly than anticipated, but the translated images were giving me multiple headaches. Turns out that Photoshop really hates me. Never trust industry standard software, I guess. Good news, though: I only needed an extra day to work around those issues, so the QA build is now on our build machine! Until next time, with Tales from the Engineer.

Into the Lavi-ratory - Project Update 4
over 6 years ago – Sun, Jan 28, 2018 at 09:26:51 PM

Welcome back to the weekly update for Newton and the Apple Tree! This is our fourth post here, making it a whole month since we started! I’m just impressed I haven’t forgotten to write one of these yet.

Not much to say again this week, our translator’s moved onto Lavi’s route (his favorite girl) and our editor’s moved on to Yotsuko’s route. Backerkits have been slightly delayed, pending a few photos, but should be with you very shortly!

Now onto the percentages! As always, these percentages will probably indicate where heroine routes split off from the main game and may be considered spoilers, so reader discretion is advised!

Translation:

  • Common Route: 76%
  • Yotsuko’s Route: 100%
  • Lavi’s Route: 30%

Editing:

  • Common Route: 76%
  • Yotsuko’s Route: 1%

*All percentages are rounded to the nearest whole value.

--TBAC

Howdy my dudes. I wonder if what I write in this corner is worthwhile at all sometimes. I was warming up this week and taking it a little easier than usual, so expect even more progress next week!

We’re finally in the middle of Lavi’s route. She’s easily the girl that moved me the most out of them all. Curious, intelligent, caring, and assertive, Lavi might seem just like a simple freak at first, but you might shed a tear or two playing her route. I recommend playing her route twice to get the most out of it. LAVI IS THE BEST!

Well, guess I better go back to work. See you guys next week!

--Bango

Why, hello there. Long time no see, but it seems like we’re nearing our first post-demo milestone, so I am going to prepare for our first round of QA testing of the content that was edited up until now. I’m sure there will be many treacherous lines of code that will break before I send it to QA, so it’s best to test in smaller parts. After all, we don’t want to swamp the testers with bugs that have nothing to do with the game’s dialogue!

Until next time, for more tales from the engineer.
